Patriot Day serves as a time of remembrance and reflection. At Florence Veterans Park, we honor the events of September 11, 2001, through our 9/11 Monument, designed by artist Alex Palkovich. The monument represents the Pentagon with the Twin Towers rising below to scale. At its center rests a 280-pound block of limestone, recovered from the western side of the Pentagon, where one of the planes hit. Next to the monument grows a seedling from the Survivor Tree, a Callery Pear Tree that was discovered damaged in the rubble at Ground Zero. Nurtured back to health, it now produces seedlings that are planted in communities around the world that have endured tragedy. Florence was chosen to receive one in 2023 in remembrance of the seven law enforcement officers ambushed in 2018, two of whom gave their lives. This living memorial stands as a symbol of resilience, healing, and hope. Veterans Park is located adjacent to the Florence Center at 842 Woody Jones Blvd and is open daily from sunrise to sunset. #PatriotDay #CityofFlorenceSC

Youth City University kicked off its first session last night at the City Center! Local high school students began their journey of exploring city government, starting with our City Manager’s Office, Human Resources, and Finance Departments. Over the next six weeks, participants will continue engaging with various departments to gain a deeper understanding of how our city operates. The new Rail Trail Extension is officially open! 🎉 The City of Florence celebrated this exciting addition with a ribbon-cutting ceremony this morning, September 4. A huge thank you to everyone who played a role in bringing this project to life and to all who joined us in today’s celebration.
