FLORENCE, SC The City of Florence Public Works Department will begin spraying for mosquitoes tomorrow evening (Thursday, May 23rd) to commence our abatement 'season.' Spraying will begin in South Florence within the municipal service area between the hours of 8 pm and midnight. This service area includes subdivisions and thoroughfares along Pamplico Hwy, South Irby Street, Howe Springs Road, Alligator Road, 2nd Loop Road, and Third Loop Road.

Mosquito abatement and control are essential, not only to eliminate the biting nuisance but also to reduce the risk of viruses such as West Nile and Zika. The City sprays/fogs with a chemical utilizing a truck-mounted ULV (Ultra Low Volume) fogger, which is ideal for eliminating both adult mosquitoes as well as their larvae. Spraying typically occurs one to two times per week unless weather dictates otherwise. We attempt to blanket multiple neighborhood areas each week. It generally takes two or three weeks of spraying to reach all areas within the city limits.

If you are a beekeeper, please contact the Public Works Department at (843) 665-3236 to inform them of your address so that spraying is limited near your hives. Although the active ingredient in the chemical application isn’t labeled to harm bees of any kind, the City of Florence is a Bee City USA affiliate and would like to be informed of your location for documentation purposes and to limit any potential issues.

Also, you may call (843) 665-3236 to submit a work order if you live in the City of Florence limits and need mosquito control assistance.
