FLORENCE, SC –   The City of Florence is proud to announce its designation as a 2024 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation, marking its 45th consecutive year of receiving the award. Additionally, the city received its 18th Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating environmental improvement, showcasing an exceptional standard of tree care. The City of Florence holds the honor of receiving the most Tree City USA Growth Awards in the state of South Carolina.

Florence achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program's four requirements: maintaining a tree board or department, having a tree care ordinance, dedicating an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita, and hosting an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. During 2024, the City of Florence planted 488 trees, pruned 1,964 trees, and removed 163 hazardous trees.

The award was presented on June 5, 2025, to the City of Florence Parks and Beautification Commission during their monthly meeting, which is held on the first Thursday of each month at 8:30 am at 513 Barnes Street, Florence, SC 29501. The award was also presented to Florence City Council during their regular meeting, held today, June 9, 2025.

City Manager Scotty Davis stated, “We are honored to be recognized as a Tree City USA for the 45th consecutive year. This milestone reflects our community’s long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainable growth, and the preservation of our urban forest. It’s a testament to the hard work of our city staff, and residents who value the vital role trees play in the health and beauty of our city.”

“By recognizing the role of trees as critical infrastructure, Florence is helping shape a healthier and more resilient future. We’re proud Florence is among the Arbor Day Foundation’s growing network of communities committed to creating positive impact through trees,” said Michelle Saulnier, Vice President at the Arbor Day Foundation.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.
