FLORENCE, SC – The City of Florence will host a public sign unveiling ceremony for Mordecai C. Johnson Park (formerly known as Northwest Park) on Friday, June 20 at 1:00 PM. The event will take place at the park, located at 801 Clement Street.
Florence City Council officially renamed the park during its January 13, 2025, meeting to honor the life and legacy of Mordecai C. Johnson, a trailblazing public servant and community leader. Mr. Johnson holds the distinction of being the first Black person since Reconstruction to serve on Florence City Council, representing District I from 1977 to 1981.
In addition to his local leadership, Mr. Johnson broke barriers at the state and national levels. He was the first Black lawyer to serve in the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, and in 1987 became the first Black representative in the House of Delegates on the South Carolina Bar for the 12th Judicial Circuit.
The City of Florence invites the public to join in this special occasion as we celebrate Mr. Johnson’s remarkable impact and unveil a new sign that proudly bears his name and legacy.
