The Parks and Leisure Services Department is responsible for planning, organizing, implementing, supervising and coordinating a comprehensive plan of leisure activities for the citizens of Florence. The Department is also charged with the responsibility of providing safe, well- maintained parks and facilities that serve the City of Florence neighborhood residents.

The City operates and maintains sixteen neighborhood park sites and facilities totaling over 600 acres, including several miles of an extensive trail system, 27 ballfields, 24 tennis courts, 9 outdoor basketball courts, 10 playgrounds, 10 picnic shelters, 1 administrative office and 4 community center buildings. Program opportunities are geared to various age groups and are coordinated through department staff with community organizations to provide a wide range of programs and activities which enhance the quality of life for the Florence resident. While many of the athletic programs are geared to accommodate the at-large community population, specific activities, such as the summer playground program, after school program and P.A.L. program, are directed at neighborhood parks and community residents.

In order to accomplish program and maintenance requirements, the Parks & Leisure Services Department is divided into three operational components – Park Facility Maintenance and Development, Community Programs and Athletics, including Freedom Florence.

Veteran's Memorial Park Progresses with Land Donation

On June 14, 2005, Mayor Frank Willis formally announced the City’s plan to design and construct a Veterans’ Memorial Park. Many in Florence had long dreamed of a memorial park that would be dedicated to the thousands of area men and women who have served their country over the last two hundred years. In 2003, a Veterans’ Memorial Park Committee was formed and the group spent the next two years in pursuit of such a space.

In 2005, the group’s goal took a quantum leap forward with the acquisition of a 5.55-acre tract of land donated by Edward L. Young and the Estate of R.P. Byrd. This tract of land, appraised at $922,000, abuts the Florence Civic Center. With the addition of unused property along the Center’s parking lot, the completed park should be about 10 acres.

The park will feature monuments and memorials to the wars of the 20th century, as well as an amphitheatre surrounded by flags. Site-work is expected to start in mid-2006. A model of the park is on display in the Florence City Manager’s Office, Room 605 of the City-County Complex.
