Northwest Community Association Creates Community Garden
January 26, 2012
The Northwest Community Association has organized a community garden for area residents. The garden is located on the corner of Sumter and Chase Streets and contains separate raised beds where gardeners may harvest vegetables and flowers.
The City of Florence Parks & Beautification Department has joined the neighborhood association in this endeavor by offering a teen gardening club to participants in the department’s teen program. The purpose of the club is to provide life skills while also educating the teenagers about organic gardening and landscaping. Teens who participate in the gardening project will gain a better understanding of volunteerism and community ownership as they assist and work with area residents.
Other benefits of Community Gardens include:
- Improves the quality of life for people in the garden
- Provides a catalyst for neighborhood and community development
- Stimulates Social Interaction
- Encourages Self-Reliance
- Beautifies Neighborhoods
- Produces Nutritious Food
- Conserves Resources
- Creates opportunity for recreation, exercise, therapy, and education
- Preserves Green Space
- Provides opportunities for intergenerational and cross-cultural connections
