Fire Sprinkler Systems and Smoke Detector Program

Fire Sprinkler Systems

The City of Florence Fire Department strongly encourages the installation of automatic fire sprinkler systems throughout buildings for the increased protection of both lives and property. These systems, usually consisting of overhead sprinklers, automatically spray either water or a chemical as soon as a detector registers the presence of fire in the area. Fire Sprinkler systems are available for homes as well as businesses and are economically priced in addition to being a significant life and property saver.

All sprinkler plans must be submitted to the State Fire Marshal's Office for plan review. Plan approval must be obtained from the State Fire Marshal's Office prior to the final inspection of the completed project.

A permit and plan review of the system is required by the Florence Fire Department prior to installation of spray booth fire extinguishing systems. The department must approve the installation plan and system features before you can proceed. Once a permit is granted and the job is completed, a final inspection of the system is required by the Florence Fire Department. This process varies in cost. For more information about fire sprinkler systems and the department review process, please stop by the Florence Fire Department main offices, located at 144 East Palmetto Street, Florence between 8:30 am and 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday, or call them at 843-665-3231.

Smoke Detector Program

Working smoke detectors can greatly increase your chances of surviving a fire in your home or office. That's why the City of Florence Fire Department encourages all citizens to install and maintain approved smoke detection devices on each sleeping floor level of their residence. The smoke detector program is designed to insure that smoke detection devices are installed in all City of Florence residences, including those of senior citizens, disabled citizens, or persons living on a fixed income.

Since the majority of fire deaths that occur in residential occupancies are caused by smoke inhalation, it is important that all City of Florence citizens have the early warning a smoke detector can provide. Florence Fire Department officials help citizens in need to install smoke detectors free of charge and remind homeowners/occupants to clean and test smoke detectors once a month and replace batteries at least once a year. For more information or to participate in the smoke detector program, stop by the department's main offices, located at 144 East Palmetto Street, Florence between 8:30 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, or call them at 843- 665-3231.
